William James "Bill" Van Sciver of Morehead City, NC passed away unexpectedly of natural causes in his home on December 27, 2025.
Bill was born July 21, 1958, in Mt. Holly, New Jersey to Margaret and J. Gilbert Van Sciver. He graduated from Burlington Township High School in 1976 with passions for photography, woodworking and crafts he continued throughout his life. He attended N.C. State University on a work-study program, graduating with a Civil Engineering degree in 1985. He spent time in Ghana, West Africa with the Peace Corps then returned to work as a general contractor in Cary, NC. He established A1A Mechanical in 1983 in Raleigh, NC and moved the business to Morehead City in 1992.
Bill was an avid scuba diver and tuna fisherman. He was an ardent supporter of North Carolina Watermen United and owner of the vessel Run Off - winner of the 2017 Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, as well as many other tournaments. His great loves were diving and fishing with his wife Katherine and son Will, spending many hours spearfishing and hunting for Megalodon teeth off the North Carolina coast.
Bill is survived by his wife of 27 years Katherine Cowper and son William (Will) Cambreleng. He is also survived by brother John (Gil) Van Sciver (MaryDel, DE) and sisters Margaret Mary Van Sciver (Mt. Pleasant, SC,) Eloise Van Sciver Briscoe (Ambler, PA) and Christine Van Sciver Chitwood (Tulsa, OK.)
Bill was an immensely proud father to Will, deeply loved Katherine and all his life cared profoundly for his sisters, brothers and his entire family. He was a devoted friend who wanted everyone to have fun and enjoy life. Easy going and personable, he initiated friendships easily. Bill was an intense listener and always knew when a soul needed lifting. He never hesitated to reach out with a caring word and to help friends in need of kindness, love, or a few laughs.
When asked what he would want people to say about his life, Bill responded, "that I enjoyed living it."
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday January 8, 2026, at St. Egbert Catholic Church, Morehead City. All are also welcome to attend a Celebration of Life on Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at Morehead City Country Club, 2900 Country Club Road, Morehead City.
