William B. Mason, 91, of Morehead City, North Carolina, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at Pruitt Health of the Crystal Coast.
Bill was born on September 26, 1933, in Kingwood, West Virginia, to the late Paul and Teresa Mason. He graduated from Oriental High School and later continued his education at Marshall College where he earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master’s Degree in Education. Bill went on to have a rewarding career in education that included stints as a history teacher, football and basketball coach, and administrator in Farmington, Michigan.
Honorably serving in the United States Air Force, he was a proud Korean War Veteran. Upon moving to the Crystal Coast of North Carolina, Bill was active in the Masonic Lodge in Morehead City, where he served as the past Grand Master.
Bill had a lifelong fascination with the American Civil War, which led to a second career as the proprietor of Bill Mason Civil War Books.
Bill is survived by his children, William Jeffrey Mason (Sandra Ludwig), Suzanne Mason, and James Kevin Mason (Kathleen); grandsons, William Ludwig Mason (Anne Paisley), James Benson Mason, and Jackson Drake Mason; granddaughter, Caitlin Ann Mason; great grandson, John Paisley Mason; and sisters, Hester Alice Neely (William) and Teresa (Les) Campbell. The family would also like to acknowledge lifelong "friends to the end" John Urquhart and Dr. John Fullmer.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Connie Drake Mason; sons, Ronald Wesley Mason, and Mark Mason; and brothers, Ronald Allgauer Mason and John Noel Mason.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Arthurdale Heritage Foundation / Mason Family Legacy, 18 Q Road, P.O. Box 850, Arthurdale, WV 26520.
A memorial service will be held at a later date, service details will be shared once finalized.
