Morehead City

William John “Johnny” Davis, 77, of Morehead City, North Carolina, was called from his earthly home to dwell with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in his eternal heavenly home on Monday, August 4, 2025.

A memorial service to celebrate Johnny’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, August 13th at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Morehead City, officiated by The Rev. Ashley Simpson. The family invites you to join them in the Fellowship Hall for a reception following the service.

Johnny was born on March 6, 1948, in New Bern, NC, to the late Gus L. and Katherine C. Davis. A dedicated education professional, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Campbell University and devoted over 30 years to teaching in the Carteret County School System.

A huge part of Morehead City history, Johnny was well loved by his numerous students, loyal friends, countless customers and supportive family. Known for his huge heart, his generosity extended to everyone he encountered, and his endless joy was contagious.

Fondly remembered by his students as one of their favorite teachers, his innovative teaching skills and interaction inspired numerous students who knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were genuinely loved. Johnny had a unique way of challenging his students whether it was his speedy math quizzes, star charts at the front of the class, the Seafood Festival in the classroom, celebrating Greek Culture Day, or fundraising for the Heart Fund organization, from math to science he knew how to motivate young minds.

Volunteering for the annual school trips to Busch Gardens, Johnny’s impact included laughter, fun and hilarious memories including shaving cream fights and celebrating crossing state lines. He shared his intense love of basketball with his students, including March Madness games and random ACC basketball players popping into his classroom. Johnny even organized and coordinated a Barnstorming Tour bringing in basketball players for exhibition games at West Carteret.

But what stands out most about Johnny’s educational career is how he impacted generations of sixth graders, making them feel seen, heard, and valued. He took the time to mentor his students, instilling within them hope, teaching life lessons and giving sound advice. Johnny taught foundational life skills about work ethics, caring for others, taking accountability for your actions and how to be brave.

Always one to stay busy, Johnny was also the proud owner of High Tide Seafood where his iconic Carolina blue jeep, filled with shrimp, was a well-loved Morehead City business. During the holiday season, he’d have a Christmas tree stand which also included crab pots sales. Some might even remember seeing handmade UNC Ram Mascots that he had out for sale.

It wasn’t a secret that he was a diehard UNC Tar Heel’s fan, sharing that intense enthusiasm wherever he went. And if your team lost to UNC, you might have experienced his playful pranks with a bit of TP in your front yard, his fun way of celebrating their victory. Another interest Johnny had was his weekly Bingo games at the Dunes Club where he was a permanent fixture on Wednesday nights.

Johnny was blessed to have his precious wife Kathy by his side throughout his life journey. While not having children of their own, they both impacted numerous lives with their devotion, love, and kindness. Their home was always filled with Johnny’s beloved Golden Retrievers, including his buddies, Zues, Achillies, Athena, Spartacus and Ulysses. He walked them religiously and was happiest when they were by his side.

It can easily be said that Johnny was a legend whose significant influence and memories blessed the hearts of young and old.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his brother, Louis James "Buddy" Davis and wife Patricia; sister-in-law, Mary Davis; nieces, Dr. Julianne Davis, Mary Katherine Davis, Ann Wilde, and Alice Anne Harrison; and nephews, Gus Davis III, Jay Davis, Matthew Bullard, and Marshall Bullard.

In addition to his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anna Kathryn “Kathy” Keller Davis; brothers, Gus L. Davis Jr. and Peter Davis; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Bullard and Jacquelyn Davis; and cousin, Charlie M. Martin.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Beverly Davis and her extraordinary team of caregivers who provided exceptional care and support.
