CW04 William Franklin Britt III, USCG Retired, 83, of Morehead City, North Carolina, passed away at his home on Tuesday, November 12, 2024.
A graveside service to honor William’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, November 18th at Bayview Cemetery in Morehead City, officiated by Rev. Patrick Whaley. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m., Monday, November 18th at Munden Funeral Home.
Born on September 14, 1941, in Jacksonville, Florida, William was a dedicated individual whose life was marked by service, teaching, and a passion for community. He was the beloved son of the late William Franklin Britt Jr. and Elizabeth Ann Chipka.
A proud veteran of the United States Coast Guard, William served his country with distinction for 32 years. His commanding officer noted his exceptional performance, acknowledging him as a highly motivated and skilled staff member who consistently excelled in his duties. William remained actively engaged with fellow veterans after his retirement, fostering camaraderie through the VFW.
In addition to his military service, William pursued a career in education, teaching middle school at Beaufort Middle School. His commitment to nurturing young minds and sharing his love of learning impacted countless students throughout his teaching career.
William was also an avid bowler, dedicating his time to both the sport and the community. As a member of the local bowling association, he contributed his expertise by serving on the Board of the Carteret-Craven Bowling Association and coaching young bowlers through the Young American Bowling Alliance (YABA).
Outside of bowling, William had varied interests that included building and working on computers, reading, and keeping up with current events through his favorite news station, CNN. His gentle giants, his dogs, Peaches, Buddy, and Bear, brought him joy and were his faithful companions.
William will be lovingly remembered as a devoted husband of 63 years, a wonderful father, and proud grandfather and great-grandfather. His legacy of kindness, love, and leadership will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Patsy Swindell Britt; daughters, Karen Floyd Bell (Linzey Douglas Bell) of Hubert, NC and Elizabeth Britt Greene of Newport, NC; brother, George Britt of Washington State; grandchildren, Tonya Hicks Utley, Cory William Hicks, Kyle Allen Floyd, Sara Hicks Martin, Sadie Alyssa Floyd, and Colton Douglas Bell; and great grandchildren, Anastasia Belle McDonald, Jasmine Marie Utley, Joseph Melvin Utley III, Ameerah Madison Martin, Troy James Floyd, Lucas Floyd, Braxton Douglas Floyd, Piper Page Clemments, Willow Jean Pickle, and Oliver Whitley Clemments.
In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by sister, Frances Ann Britt.
