Obituary

William “Bill” Parke Ballantine Sr., 86, of Broad Creek, North Carolina, passed away peacefully in his living room overlooking his beloved Bogue Sound on Friday, May 8, 2026.

A memorial service to honor Bill’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 30th at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, officiated by The Reverend Jeffrey Roy. The family invites you to join them for a reception following the service. For those unable to attend, the memorial service can be viewed through his obituary page on Munden Funeral Home’s website.

Bill was born on January 26, 1940, in Newark, New Jersey, to the late Robert and Margaret Ballantine. He came from the well-known Ballantine brewing family, founders of the P. Ballantine & Sons Brewing Company, established in 1845 in Newark, NJ. At its height in the mid-20th century, the brewery became the third-largest beer producer in the United States, leaving behind a legacy that remained a point of pride throughout Bill’s life.

Bill honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Following his service, he built a long and fulfilling career in architectural design, where his creativity, skill, and eye for craftsmanship earned the admiration of many. He was a talented builder who took great pride in working with his hands and bringing ideas to life.

Known affectionately as “The Iron Man,” Bill faced years of kidney-related health challenges with remarkable strength, determination, and resilience. Even through difficult times, he maintained his spirit, sense of humor, and appreciation for life.

Bill found joy in the simple things that made a house a home. He loved cooking meals for family and friends, tending to his garden, sailing along the Crystal Coast, and spending time relaxing by his pool. Above all else, Bill treasured his family. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loving grandfather whose presence, wisdom, and steady love will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 60 years, Maxine Ballantine; daughter, Deirdre Ballantine of Cape Carteret, NC; son, William Parke Ballantine Jr. and wife Dr. Carolyn Oates Ballantine of Raleigh, NC; sister, Jennette Ballantine Mikels of Knoxville, TN; brother, Robert D. Ballantine of Annandale, NJ; grandson, William Parke Ballantine III of Woodberry Forest School, VA; numerous loving cousins; and his furry friends, his dog, “B” and cats; and his grand dog, SaVi.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brother, Martin D. Ballantine.

As an expression of sympathy, flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Foundation, 11921 Rockville Pike, Suite 300, Rockville, MD 20852.
