Sonny was born on May 24, 1945, in Kinston, NC, where he met the love of his life, Marie. He attended East Carolina University and graduated in 1967 with a degree in Business Administration. He and Marie began a 60+ year journey together in Kinston before moving to Carteret County.
A gifted businessman with a sharp mind for numbers, Sonny began his career by providing accounting services to health care facilities across Eastern North Carolina. Later, he transitioned into real estate, where he enjoyed selling property and developing land, especially on cherished family property in Broad Creek. Above all, Sonny treasured his role as a father, often saying that raising and watching his children grow was his greatest accomplishment.
Sonny loved the outdoors, porch sitting, fishing, and socializing. In his early retirement years, he could often be found at Sea Water Marina, catching up with some of his closest buddies and like-minded friends.
In addition to his devoted wife, Marie, Sonny is survived by his children, Trent Humphrey Gerrans, Walter Emerson “Trey" Humphrey Ill (Kristi), and Amanda Humphrey James (Todd); his grandchildren, Zan Gerrans, Eli Gerrans, Hailey Humphrey, and Cole James; his sister, Norrine Gray (Calvin); and his sister-in-law, Suzan Stafford (Bill).
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Emerson Humphrey "Pop" and Madaline Martin Humphrey "Patti"; his son-in-law, Bill Gerrans; and by his beloved grandson, Walter Emerson "Emery" Humphrey IV.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who have offered love and support during this time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Sonny's honor may be made to Carteret Hospice at P.O. Box 1619, Morehead City, NC 28557.
