Troy “Terry” Garner Sr., 92, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at his home.

A graveside service to honor Terry’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 18 at Amariah Garner Cemetery in Newport, officiated by Jerry Garner. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 17 at Munden Funeral Home.

Terry was born on August 12, 1933, in Newport, NC, to the late Jesse and Maggie Garner. He was a faithful member of Newport Baptist Church, Victory Baptist Church, and later Holly Springs First Free Will Baptist Church, where he enjoyed the fellowship there. Terry worked for more than 36 years as a longshoreman, earning his coworkers respect for his strong work ethic and willingness to lend a helping hand. He farmed for over 30 years, taking pride in the many harvests he provided for his family.

Terry could fix just about anything. Whether tinkering with cars, repairing plumbing, woodworking, or tackling a project around the house, he was the one you would want close by. His kitchen was where his talent really shined. Terry’s collards and chicken salad were legendary, and no one wasted any time getting to the table for his delicious turkey and rice. He enjoyed canning fig preserves, baking molasses cookies, and appreciating the bounty that each season brought.

He cherished his family and was blessed to share more than 62 years of marriage with the love of his life, Georgia. His wisdom and constant presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of his friends and family.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his sons, Troy Maurice Garner Jr. (Susan) of Newport, NC and Jerry Edward Garner of Newport, NC; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Garner of Newport, NC and Nancy Garner of Winston Salem, NC; grandchildren, Danielle Lynn Windham (Doug) of Newport, NC, Timothy Garner of Havelock, NC, Sarah Goodwin (DJ) of Augusta, GA and Joanna Garner of Delaware; numerous great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Terry was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Millis Garner; sister, Lillian Wynne; and brothers, Neal Garner, Jerry Garner, The Rev. Tom Garner, and James Garner.
