Stephanie Ann
Smith
March 12, 1944 – May 19, 2026
Stephanie Ann Smith, 82, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at Crystal Bluffs Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Morehead City, North Carolina, having been a resident there since March 2020.
Born Stephanie Ann Horsman, on March 12, 1944, at Columbia Hospital for Women, in Washington DC, she was the daughter of the late Charles Stephen Horsman, of Baltimore, Maryland, and the late Nancy Drake Dotson, of Wilson NC. Charles and Nancy divorced in 1952, and she was raised by her father and her stepmother, Roberta Ethel Custer, of Middletown, NY after Charles and Roberta (known as "Bobbie" to friends and family) married in October 1952.
Stephanie (known to her family as "Stevie") grew up in Florida and Maryland, and graduated from Glenelg High School in Maryland, in 1962.
In 1963 (at age 19, and with her father's permission) she married Arthur Henry Smith "Smitty", of Tampa Florida. They had two daughters, Donna in 1964, and Cindy in 1965. Stevie and Smitty divorced in 1968. Tragically, Cindy died at age 11 in a car accident in Georgia, along with 3 other young girls.
Stevie was working at a cosmetics firm in Laurel, Maryland when she was injured in a warehouse accident that left her unable to work, due to back pain, even after surgery. After many years in Laurel Maryland, Stevie moved to Newport, North Carolina to be near her sister Bonnie Smith.
On her birthday in 2020, Stevie suffered a fall and was hospitalized, never recovering enough to return home.
Stevie is survived by her daughter, Donna Shaffer of Tampa, FL; her granddaughter, Aisha Smith (37); her great-granddaughters, Ariana Smith (19) and Annarose Smith (5); her brothers, Mike Horsman of Harpers Ferry, WV and Wayne Horsman of Columbia, MD; her step-sister, Karen Allred of Roseville, CA; and her nephew, Tom Kroll of Newport, NC.
Stevie was predeceased by her father, Charles Horsman; her mother, Nancy; her stepmother, Bobbie; her daughter, Cindy Smith; her brothers, Drake Horsman and Alan Horsman; her sister, Bonnie Smith; and her ex-husband, Smitty.
A service is not planned at this time. The family suggests a donation in her name to your favorite charity.
