Sherman A. “Butch” Griffin, 77, of Beaufort, North Carolina, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 29, 2024.
A memorial service to honor Butch’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, September 4th at Munden Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Merle Hunt and Rev. Mitchell Parker.
Butch was born on January 14, 1947, in Newport, NC, to the late Sherman Griffin and Oleta Pollock Griffin. He was a proud Army Veteran, who served from November 14, 1966, until November 14, 1969. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was a sharpshooter for the Army.
Butch had a love for the outdoors like no other. He spent countless hours in the woods hunting deer, raccoons, and squirrels. If he wasn’t in the woods, you could find him sitting at the kitchen table playing cards and drinking coffee.
He worked at Open Grounds Farm as a cowboy for over a decade, where he met and became friends with a tractor driver named Curtis. Little did he know he would soon meet Curtis’ sister Barbara, fall in love, and marry her on June 18, 1976. They started a family and bought a house on Highway 101, where they would spend the next 48 years together.
After a few years, Butch then began a new chapter as he became a commercial fisherman. He worked the waters of Carteret County and the surrounding areas.
Butch loved when summer rolled around so he and Barbara could have their famous cookouts. All their family and friends would gather for a good time. His closest friend who was like a brother, Kevin O’Connor, would play his guitar and sing while everyone enjoyed his drunk chickens and clam bake.
He loved having his family close by. If you knew Butch you were truly blessed.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 48 years, Barbara Dudley Griffin; daughters, Christine Dudley of Mill Creek, Michelle Harris of Highway 101, Jessica Felton of Havelock, and Dana Griffin of Beaufort; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Caleb), TJ (Ariel), Cheyanne (Clark), Brian, Davien (Kiara), and Adrian; great-grandchildren, Cooper, Davina, Delilah, Davien Jr., Kayson, and Elias; sisters, Terry Garner of Newport, Connie Willis (Leon) of Florida, and Peggy Styron (Billy) of Beaufort; brother, Chuck Griffin (Cathy) of Mocksville; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Butch was preceded in death by his brother, Earl “Randy” Griffin.
Family and friends are welcome to submit online condolences.
