Shelby Jean Burch Blackburn

January 22, 1938 — June 1, 2025

Mill Creek

Shelby Jean Burch Blackburn, age 87, of Mill Creek, NC passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at Spring Arbor Assisted Living facility in Greenville, NC.

The family will be receiving guests from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., Friday, June 6th at Munden Funeral Home, followed by a celebration of life service at 11:30 a.m. at Gethsemane Memorial Park.

Jean was born on January 22, 1938, in Greensboro, NC but grew up in Surry County, NC.

For those who knew her, you know she was small in stature but mighty in spirit. Strong-willed and strong-bodied, with high standards for herself and others. She found joy in cooking for others, working outside and keeping a spotless home – always taking great pride in the way she cared for what was hers. If there’s truth to the saying, cleanliness is next to godliness’, then surely, she is right there beside the Lord today.

She had a gift for making friends wherever she went – never meeting a stranger and once you were in her life, she stayed there. She was a devoted wife, caring mother and doting grandmother – all were the most important parts of a job she took very seriously. “Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” Colossians 3:23 – and that’s how she lived.

In her final days, when clarity briefly returned, her wish was simple; that we be happy. Today, we hold on to the promise that she is – wrapped in God’s love, free from suffering, and rejoicing in heaven beside Daddy. We will miss our Mama so much.

Those remaining to cherish her memory are her daughter Joyce Scheibler and son-in-law Paul Scheibler, her daughter Jana Evanger and son-in-law Sam Evanger, her grandson Jonathan Scheibler and wife Allison Scheibler, great-grandsons Levi and Oliver Scheibler, and her granddaughters Kendra Evanger and Shelby James Evanger, named in honor of her grandparents.

In addition to her parents, Vertie Burch New and George Burch, Jean was preceded in death by her cherished husband James Blackburn, her sisters Mollie Sneed, “Tootie” Sneed, and Linda Haney, as well as her brother “Bud” Burch.

As an expression of sympathy, colorful flowers are welcome.

Family and friends are welcome to submit online condolences at www.mundenfuneralhome.net.
