Harkers Island

Roy R. Grant Jr., 92, of Harkers Island, North Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at his home.

Roy was born on June 16, 1931, in Bryson City, North Carolina, to the late Roy and Essie Grant. His early years in the Eagle Scouts equipped him with perseverance, discipline, and motivation and helped form him into a man of strong character. At the young age of 19, Roy entered the military and honorably served his country in both the United States Coast Guard and the United States Navy, earning the National Defense Service Medal for his dedication.

Roy held the position of Head Clinical Research Associate at Ayerst Labs where he took great pride in his work, enjoying the challenges and new possibilities of the research field.

A strong believer in giving back to the community, Roy was a member of the Exchange Club, happily using his time and talents to benefit his local community. Toastmasters was another organization he was proud to be a member of, helping to equip others with leadership skills and positive learning experiences. Living on the coast, Roy had a passion for preservation and was a strong supporter of the Coastal Conservation Association, helping to conserve, promote and enhance our coastal resources. Roy's activities and willingness to give back to the community were a true reflection of his positive impact on the lives of those around him.

Roy loved to hunt and fish and had a particular fondness for catching speckled trout with their challenging nature and delicious taste they made for a great catch.

Fascinated with antiques, Roy was skilled at preserving and refinishing various pieces of furniture with his specialty being beautiful Hoosier cabinets. His craftsmanship was evident in each antique he worked on.

Deeply cherished by his family, Roy was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who had a lasting impact on his family's legacy.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Margaret G. Grant; daughter, Terri G. Spence of Harkers Island; sons, Stephen E. Grant (B.G. Davis) of Harkers Island and Roy R. Grant III (Debbie Dudar Grant) of Hampstead, MD; brother, Eric B. Grant (Wanda); grandchildren, Amy Manners (Bob) and David H. Spence (Hannah); and grandchildren, Kaylea E. Manners, Reagan Spence, and Grant Spence.
