Obituary

Roy T. Cannon Sr., 78, of Broad Creek, North Carolina, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at UNC Chapel Hill Medical Center.

A funeral service to honor Roy’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 24th at Broad Creek Methodist Church, officiated by Eric Matthews. Interment will follow at Broad Creek Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Roy was born on August 19, 1947, in Newport, North Carolina, to the late Charlie and Pearly Cannon. He proudly served in the United States Coast Guard, an experience that reflected his dedication and love for the water. Roy was well known for his love of the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, and especially spending time along the Bogue Sound. One of his favorite pastimes was striking mullet, a tradition he truly loved. He was also a skilled oysterman who was always happy to share his catch, often giving away oysters to friends and family.

Roy had a deep appreciation for good food and fellowship. He loved fried seafood and never missed an opportunity to gather with others. A natural socializer, Roy enjoyed visiting, laughing, and making connections wherever he went. He looked forward to monthly dinners with his high school friends, friendships he valued throughout his life. He enjoyed watching Gunsmoke, a favorite show that kept him entertained.

Roy dedicated much of his life to serving his community. He worked at NADEP for many years. Roy volunteered with Broad Creek EMS and was a faithful member of the Salter Path Men’s Club. He also served as security at Broad Creek Methodist Church, where he was a familiar and trusted presence. His kindness, humor, and easygoing spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his sons, Roy T. “Ty” Cannon Jr. (Roma) of Emerald Isle, N.C., Jonathan “Brad” Cannon of Newport; sisters, Janice Cannon of Newport, N.C., Cherry Matthews of Newport, N.C., Sandy Glancy of Newport, N.C.; grandsons, Tyler B. Cannon of Burgaw, N.C., Devin C. Cannon of Newport, N.C., Gray B. Cannon of Emerald Isle, N.C., Spivey B. Cannon of Emerald Isle, N.C.; and great grandson, Clay M. Cannon

In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Virginia Spivey Cannon; brothers, Gene and Alton Cannon; sister, Brenda White; and two siblings that passed away at birth.

As an expression of sympathy, flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to Broad Creek Methodist Church, 562 Broad Creek Loop Road, Newport, N.C. 28570.
