Richard Edgar Merrit Whittaker, 80, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away on July 25, 2025, at his home surrounded by family.
Richard was born on May 30, 1945, in New York City, New York to the late Richard and Althea Whittaker.
He was a dedicated employee of Carteret County Schools for 33 years. Known for his strong work ethic and kind spirit, he spent his career as a custodian, always taking pride in his work and caring deeply for the school community.
Outside of work, he found joy in life’s simple pleasures — long walks, cooking homemade meals for his family, and tending to his yard with great care. He had a special love for fresh, local produce and could often be found picking berries or visiting nearby farms. Generous and thoughtful, he delighted in delivering food to friends and neighbors, always spreading warmth through his cooking and presence. His legacy of love, service, and quiet strength will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his daughters, Kristine Davis, Beverly Whittaker, and Karen Marie Hanson; sons, Jeff Hansen (Rachel) and James M. Hansen, Jr.; brothers, Bruce Whittaker, Michael Whittaker, Mark Whittaker, and Robin Whittaker; 18 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Iantha Whittaker and brothers, Timothy Whittaker, Gary Whittaker, and Ronald Whittaker.
