Richard “Rick” Carraway, 75, of Morehead City, North Carolina, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House.
A memorial service to honor Rick’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 21st at Munden Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Tim Marriner and Rev. Shad Barrow. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Born on August 23, 1948, Rick was the son of the late Jake and Dollie Carraway. Growing up in South River, Rick developed a love for the great outdoors, spending endless happy hours hunting and fishing throughout his life.
From a young age, Rick developed a strong sense of duty and honor. He courageously served his country in the United States Coast Guard, undertaking two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. After his honorable discharge in 1971, Rick continued his commitment to his beloved country as a dedicated member of the North Carolina National Guard, ultimately retiring in the 1990s.
Following his military service, Rick ventured into a fulfilling career as a Geodetic Surveyor with the State of North Carolina Marine and Fisheries. For an impressive 36 years, Rick diligently worked to ensure the accuracy and integrity of geospatial data. It was during his time at Marine Fisheries that Rick met his beloved wife, Betty, who brought much joy and love into his life. His professionalism and dedication were greatly admired by his colleagues, many of whom became lifelong friends.
Above all else, Rick cherished his role as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His unconditional love and support were felt by all those fortunate enough to be part of his life.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 45 years, Betty Carraway; daughters, Cristie Burns (John) of Newport, and Michelle Butler (Billy) of Morganton; brother, Mike Carraway (Lynn) of Beaufort; grandchildren, Matthew Dillingham, Junior Willis, Cristian Penland, and Robbie Butler; 1 great-granddaughter; and 3 great-grandsons.
In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his Yellow Lab, Tyler.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Crystal Coast Hospice House, P.O. Box 640, Newport, NC 28570.
