Rex Joel Marion Jr., 63, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Duke University Hospital.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Rex was born on August 22, 1960, in Mount Airy, North Carolina, to the late Joel and Betty Marion. He lived a life dedicated to hard work and the well-being of his family. He retired after 34 fulfilling years as an Arborist, Rex loved his work, and it showed in his every expression.

Living on the coast, Rex enjoyed the beauty of Cape Lookout and the Banks. He enjoyed his time there with friends and family and appreciated his love for the simple pleasures of life.

Rex was an absolute maestro behind the grill, known for his mouthwatering scallops and oysters that left everyone's taste buds in a state of utter delight. His culinary skills were unmatched, and his delicious creations will be greatly missed.

Rex's strong faith was shared through his role as a Sunday school teacher and in his work with the church youth group. After moving to the coast, he attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Marshallberg. Over the years he impacted the lives of countless young individuals who looked up to him as a mentor and friend. Rex had a unique ability to connect with anyone. Known as the "baby whisperer" and the "dog whisperer," his gentle nature and inherent kindness won the hearts not only of his own family but of many others.

Rex had a zest for life that was contagious. He had a magnetic personality and a quick wit that could light up any room. He found great joy in spending time with his friends and family, always ensuring they were enveloped in warm laughter and genuine happiness. Above all, he treasured the time spent with his grandchildren, imparting wisdom and nurturing their spirits with love and guidance.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Donna Tucker Marion; daughters, Tara Marion-Short (Chris) of Marshallberg, NC, and Kristi Massey (Jason) of Mt. Airy, NC; daughter-in-law, Erin Simpson (fiancé Dayton Phillips) of Dobson, NC; sister, Elizabeth Marion of Marion, NC; grandchildren, Keaton Massey (Fiancé Bethany Hewitt), Max Short, Georgia Short, Emerson Simpson, TC Simpson III, and Wylder Phillips; special uncle, Tommy Draughn; honorary children, Jessie and Jimmy Mitchell of Atlantic, NC; and honorary grandchildren, Cooper Mitchell, Emery Mitchell, and Sammy Humphries.
