Obituary

Rev. Sherman Guthrie, 82, of Beaufort, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 17, 2026, at Carteret Health Care.

A funeral service to honor Rev. Guthrie’s life will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, April 25th at Harkers Island Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Vergie Mae Cemetery. The family will receive friends the evening prior from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Friday, April 24th at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City. For those unable to attend, the service can be viewed through his obituary page on Munden Funeral Home’s website.

Sherman was born on Harkers Island to Andrew and Edith Guthrie. Sherman graduated from Smyrna High School in 1962. He then joined the Coast Guard, where he served honorably for four years. He married Cora Lawrence in 1963. Cora was his high school sweetheart and the true love of his life.

He and Cora raised their children to show compassion for others, and have a belief in our Lord Jesus Christ. Cora, losing her fight from cancer, preceded him in death on March 24th, 1995. Sherman was remarried to Kimberly Mann, who later passed away in January of 2020.

Sherman went to work at Cherry Point Air Base, where he became a trouble-shooting mechanic on F4 Fighter Jets. In 1977, Sherman was called to serve the Lord, and became a pastor for the United Methodist Church. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Elizabeth City State University. And also obtained his two year seminar degree with Duke University. He pastored several churches throughout eastern North Carolina. Thereby, helping to bring many souls to Christ.

Sherman’s legacy is shown through his 46 years of being a pastor for Christ. Preaching thousands of sermons, countless funerals, and often uniting couples in marriage. He is cherished by many whose lives he touched. He fervently loved the Lord and wanted to serve Him until his death.

He loved his family with conviction, coming in second only to his love for our Lord Jesus. He was a known “car guy ‘. Mainly with his love of Fords. Having several Mustangs and F-150’s over the years. He had a great love for being on the water, over to the Cape and Shackleford Banks, with Church Family. Teaching his children how to water-ski, have good moral character and love the Lord.

He is survived by his two children, Wendy Shera and Shane Guthrie; four grandchildren, Stacie Thomas, Kayley Willis, Mahlon and Amanda Guthrie; five great grand-children; and one brother, Andrew “Andy” Guthrie.

In heaven, he joins his parents, Andrew and Edith; beloved wife, Cora; late wife, Kimberly; and his brothers, Bill and Jerry.

Your work on earth is done, good and faithful servant. Earning his wings and halo, he now looks down watching over us. You will forever be missed, but never forgotten.

Family and friends are welcome to submit online condolences at www.mundenfuneralhome.net.
