Obituary

Nellie Sue Gillikin Brown, 85, of Otway, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Carteret Health Care.

Sue will be laid to rest privately.

Sue was born on November 30, 1940, in Otway, North Carolina, to the late Roosevelt and Ruth Frances Gillikin. She was a graduate of Smyrna High School and a lifelong member of Otway Christian Church, where she grew up and faithfully worshiped throughout her life. Sue was truly the heart and soul of her family- full of life, love, and laughter. She had a passion for traveling, exploring not only the United States but also destinations overseas, creating precious memories along the way. She was quite content tending to her garden and nurturing her plants and flowers.

Sue joined alongside her sisters at the scallop house, a time in her life she held dear. She was a devoted military wife, always supporting her husband. Her love story began in 1962 at the Atlantic Beach Pavilion, where she met the love of her life, Larry. They were married in 1963 and shared over 63 beautiful years together. Sue was known for her incredible cooking skills, preparing delicious meals during the holidays and her thoughtful gifts she couldn’t wait for her family to open. She also enjoyed the thrill of playing slot machines at casinos, showing her fun-loving side. May she be remembered for her deep love for her family and the happiness she brought into their lives.

Those remaining to cherish her memory are her loving husband Larry of the home; daughters, Debra Sue Brown of Newport, N.C., Carol Lynn Brown of Otway, N.C.; sister, Alma Guthrie of Harkers Island, N.C.; grandchildren, Hope Howard, Derek Harvey, Megan Harvey, and Briana Brown; great grandchildren, Makaylynn Brown-Harvey, Peyton Harvey, Ioanah Harvey, Makyla Harvey, Rhiannon Howard, and Duncan Harvey.

In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her 6 siblings.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a special charity of one’s choice.
