Nathan Garner, Sr.

Nathan Garner, Sr., 85, of Newport, died Friday, September 11, 2009, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Garner was retired from First Citizens Bank of Newport after 38 years of service. He was a member of Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church, where he was a long time Sunday School teacher. He served on many boards and committees within the church. He served as Carteret County Commissioner for eight years, four of which he was Chairman. He also served as interim County Manager. He was an honorary Trustee for Mt. Olive College and was a graduate of North Carolina State University. He was a member of the Newport Rotary Club for 50 years. He was a devoted and loving husband and father, was an avid gardner and loved watching all sports.

Services will be held 11:00 am Monday at Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Ray Conner officiating. Interment will follow in Amariah Garner Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Wiggins Garner; three daughters, Sandy Garner Willis and husband Tommie of Morehead City, Mallory Garner Byrd and husband Randy of Newport and Millie Garner Temple and husband Michael of Harlowe; a son, Nathan Garner, Jr. of Broad Creek; a grandson, John Conner, IV and wife Carrie of Morehead City; three great grandchildren, Curren Conner, Jack Conner and Ruby Conner, all of Morehead City and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

The family will receive friends 5:00 - 7:00 pm Sunday at Munden Funeral Home.
