Mitchell Donald "Donnie"
Lewis
October 20, 1941 – April 25, 2026
Mitchell Donald "Donnie" Lewis, 84, born on October 20, 1941, peacefully passed away on April 25, 2026.
Donnie will be laid to rest privately beside his mother at Broad Creek Community Cemetery.
Donnie was born at home in Broad Creek and raised in the same community, where he found his roots and built a life of purpose and dedication. Donnie graduated from Morehead City High School and began working at a local store in Broad Creek while pursuing his education. His dedication to hard work led him to the Newport Garment Company before he enlisted in the Air Force, where he proudly served for four years and was stationed in Charleston, South Carolina. Following his military service, Donnie remained in Charleston for several years, embracing the lifestyle and opportunities the city offered.
He furthered his education by graduating from Carteret Community College with a degree in business before embarking on a fulfilling career at Cherry Point as an aircraft mechanic. Subsequently, Donnie contributed his expertise to the shoe departments at K-Mart and later Walmart, where his commitment to excellence and customer service shone brightly. A man of integrity and kindness, Donnie always encouraged his sisters to be independent and was a steadfast pillar of support for his family and friends. His love for his family was unwavering, and his loyalty and compassion touched the lives of many. Mitchell Lewis was a resident artist at Carolina Artist Gallery as a photographer and treasurer for at least 8 years. His extensive photography collection promoted the natural beauty of Carteret County, Shackleford Banks horses and Morehead City’s early days.
Beyond his professional achievements and artistic pursuits, Donnie found joy in traveling, camping, and cherishing the beauty of nature. He loved playing gospel music, often using his karaoke machine to share his favorite songs. He enjoyed exploring his family’s genealogy and took great pride in his coastal roots. He was especially drawn to the history of Broad Creek, once called El Dorado, where families in the early 1900’s floated their homes across Bogue Sound from the barrier islands after severe storms. An ardent animal lover, he found solace in the company of his furry companions and instilled values of education and ambition in his family, always expressing pride in their accomplishments.
Donnie is survived by his cherished sister, Jean Dale Mileham of Newport, NC; sister-in-law, Elsie Lewis of Davie, FL; and a host of nieces and nephews who will carry forth his legacy of love, dedication, and generosity. His memory will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Kathleen Lewis; his brother, Jimmy Lewis; and sister, Yvonne McCabe.
Rest in peace, Donnie, your impact on the lives of those around you will endure through the ages.
“I will love you until the flowers forget to bloom.”
