Milton Owen Mitchum Jr. “Skunk”, 73, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at ECU Health Medical Center.

A memorial service honoring his life will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday, November 3rd at Graham Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church in Mill Creek, Rev. Chad Graham officiating. The family invites friends to gather one hour prior to the service for a time of remembrance. Following the service, all are welcome to join the family for a meal and fellowship. All attendees are encouraged to wear his favorite colors of blaze orange and camo in his honor.

Milton, known as “Skunk” to family and friends, was born on February 2, 1952, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, to the late Milton and Mary Mitchum.

Skunk was an avid deer hunter and in his later years nothing was more exciting for him than to watch the younger generation learn to hunt. When they shot nobody hollered louder and cheered them on more. A proud member of the Coyote Fox Pen Community, Milton could often be found either competing or judging hunts on weekends. His favorite hunting buddy was his grandson, Sonny Coy, who made him so proud, whether it was hunting, baseball or football, Papa was his biggest fan.

In addition to his love for hunting, Milton took up golf later in life, consistently enjoying the game during the off season. He was a great athlete and excelled at golf as well as baseball in his earlier years.

His presence left a lasting impact on those around him, as he was well-loved and respected by many.

Though Skunk left this world too soon, it is comforting to know that on the morning of October 28th, Pastor Chad Graham visited him at the hospital, leading him to accept Jesus Christ as his Savior. Now there is no doubt that his new address is Heaven.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife, Christine Mitchum; brother, Lanier Mitchum (Annette); stepchildren, Jeremy Coy (Jasmine) and Todd Coy (Erin); grandchildren, AJ, Anna, Summer, Aaron, Sonny, and Ava Jolene; and numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Skunk was blessed with numerous friends including Darin Dixon, Dustin Martin, Jay Bell, Reid Fulp and Randy Mortdecai. All who stepped up to assist and support Skunk as his health declined.

In addition to his parents, Milton was preceded in death by his beloved grandfather and grandmother, Enoch Lanier Mitchum and Lucille Mitchum; and brother, Lester Mitchum.

As an expression of sympathy, flowers are welcome.

Family and friends are welcome to submit online condolences at www.mundenfuneralhome.net.
