MgySgt John “JB” Barnes Flanigan Jr. (USMC Retired), 88, of Havelock, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at his home.
A private service will be held to honor John’s life.
JB was born on November 24, 1937, in Buffalo, New York, to the late John and Adelaide Flanigan. JB lived a life marked by discipline, curiosity, and deep devotion to both his family and his country. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps for 28 ½ years, retiring as a Master Gunnery Sergeant. His service reflected his strong character and leadership- qualities that defined him throughout his life.
For more than 30 years, JB practiced Tai Chi, finding both strength and peace in the art. He was an avid stamps collector and had a deep love for family genealogy, dedicating countless hours to preserving the stories and history of those who came before him. He loved to travel and had a special fondness for Ireland, which he visited six times.
JB was adventurous, having been a past scuba diver, enthusiastic bowler, and known by many as a bit of a pool shark. He was a good man who was steadfast, thoughtful, and deeply devoted to his family. JB leaves behind a legacy of service and love that will be cherished and remembered always.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his daughters Laura S. Ryals (David) of McLeansville, N.C., Leigh A. Anderson of New Bern, N.C.; son, John B. Flanigan III (Jen Jen Yeh) of Havelock, N.C; and girlfriend, HuiCha Kim.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel Flanigan; sister, Maureen Flanigan Hyla; grandchildren, Patrick Ryals, Rebecca Ryals; and son-in-law, Eddie Anderson.
