Mercedes Laureano Myers, 93, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, September 4, 2026.

Mercedes was born on August 10, 1933, in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, to the late Pedro Laureano and Rosenda Melendez.

Family was truly the center of Mercedes' world, and her greatest joy came from the people she loved most. She was blessed to share 50 wonderful years with her beloved husband and sweetheart, Duke, who passed away in 2025. During Duke's 22-year career in the United States Navy, Mercedes was a devoted and supportive military wife, embracing the many adventures and experiences that came with military life. She later worked at the Navy Exchange, where she proudly served as manager and genuinely enjoyed the people she worked with and the role she held.

Mercedes will be remembered for the love she poured into her family and the special place each of them held in her heart. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, and proud grandmother and great-grandmother.

Those remaining to cherish her memory are her daughter, Joan McCartney (Jeffrey) of Newport, NC; son, Joseph DiCorsi of Newport, NC; grandchildren, Jessica Scruggs and Jason McCartney (Sandee); and great-grandchildren, Madison Dixon, Juliet Dixon, Skylar Scruggs, Daxon Scruggs, Charlotte Scruggs, Mollie Jo McCartney, and Madison McCartney.

In addition to her parents, Mercedes was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Fletcher "Duke" Myers.
