Maxine Spence Hitchcock

September 10, 1942 — March 7, 2024

Beaufort

Maxine Spence Hitchcock, left us on the morning of March 7th of 2024, at 81 years of age.

A memorial service to honor Maxine’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 15th at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, NC.

She was born and raised by the late Noah James and Bernice Spence in Maysville, North Carolina.

Maxine “Nana” was a gorgeous human inside and out. She loved her family and adopted anyone into it. When asking her grandchildren about their favorite memories, she was a master at planting “can-openers” (cantaloupes) and a “5-star chef” when it came to making pancakes or playing doctor when it came to all of our stuffed animals. In our eyes, there was nothing she couldn't do or fix. We never heard the word “no” from her.

Nana had a green thumb like no other, she could make anything grow if you gave it to her. If she wasn’t spoiling her grandkids, you would find her on the beach soaking up the sun or on her back porch under her umbrella. Before Covid hit, Nana loved to travel with her friend Miss Sally or play bingo with her longtime friend Linda Warren.

She is survived by her siblings, Milton Spence (Anne) of Jacksonville NC, Okla Spence of Maysville NC, and Harold Spence (Cindy) of Maysville NC; daughter, Cheryl Livesay of Newport, NC; son, Larry “Bill” D. Bailey Jr. of Nash County, NC; son-in-law, David Livesay of Newport, NC; grandchildren, Jordan Livesay, Lily Livesay, both of Newport, NC, Megan Bailey of Gates County, NC, and Hailey Odham (Hunter) of Kodiak, AK; and great-granddaughter, Harlow Odham of Kodiak, AK.

In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Chuck” E. Hitchcock; and siblings, Noah James Spence Jr., Jerry Spence Sr., and Gayle Spence Moore.
