January 31, 1932 – April 6, 2026
Marjorie Crump McDermott, 94, of Newport, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2026, at Carteret Landing.
Marjorie was born on January 31, 1932, in Hickory, North Carolina, to the late Jones Edward and Margaret Goebel Crump. Marjorie graduated from Hickory High School before continuing her studies at Warren Wilson Junior College, where she earned her associate degree. Her dedication to education continued late in life when, at the age of 34, she returned to school in 1966 at the University of Pittsburgh. Through determination and perseverance, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in 1969, followed by a Master’s degree in Library Science in 1971 from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Library and Information Science.
Earlier in her career, she began working in 1952 with AT&T in the accounting department, where she was responsible for recording and reporting linemen’s worksheets during a pivotal time when the company was beginning to computerize its accounting systems. In 1954, she married the love of her life, John Kenneth McDermott. Together, they built a beautiful life together. The couple moved to Pittsburgh in 1957 and welcomed their children in 1958 and 1960.
Following the completion of her degrees, Marjorie embarked on a distinguished career in library science. She worked at Warren Wilson College as a cataloger, she relocated to Gastonia, where she served as a periodical’s librarian at Queens College. Marjorie later worked with Duke Energy as a standards librarian. Her career culminated at Belmont Abbey College, where she served as Director of Library Sciences for the final 18 years of her professional life. Her leadership, dedication, and passion for knowledge left a lasting impact on students, faculty, and the community.
Those remaining to cherish her memory are her daughter and son; sister, Betty C. Blackburn; and brother, Kenneth P. Crump.
In addition to her parents, Marjorie was preceded in death by her loving husband, John K. McDermott; siblings, Robert Crump Sr., Sarah C. Eckard, Miriam C. Portis, Ruth C. Johnson, William Howard Crump, and Grady Crump Sr.
