Margaret Harriet Nelson

Margaret Harriet Nelson, 93, of Newport, passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at Crystal Coast Hospice House.

Margaret was born on September 28, 1931, in Washington, D.C., to the late Earl and Edith Matthews. Margaret was married to her beloved husband John for 46 beautiful years. Together they built a life based on love, laughter, and shared adventures. One of their favorite pastimes was going out to eat, simply enjoying each other’s company and good food.

A hard working and giving woman, Margaret dedicated herself to her family. She was the proud mother of four children, each of whom she loved deeply. Her love extended to her grandchildren as well, so much so that she kept a car she never drove, just so her grandkids could enjoy it when they visited. Margaret had a generous spirit and sense of fun, she also had a fondness for the nickel slots, always finding joy in the occasional lucky streak. She will be deeply missed and forever loved by her friends and family.

Those remaining to cherish her memory are her daughters, Linda King (Chris) of Fredericksburg, VA, Elizabeth Sorrels (Danny) of Newport, N.C.; grandchildren, Delina Sorrels, James Sorrels, Desiree Rouse, Dominique Sorrels, Heather Nelson, Kenny Nelson, Dawn Bowler; and great grandchildren, Brie Sweet, Jordan Sweet, Jack Rouse, Kinley Rouse, Wyatt Sorrels, Weston Sorrels, Thomas Hamilton, Parker Hamilton, and Michael Bowler.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, John Nelson; sons, Michael Gibson, and John Nelson; and brother, Earl Matthews.
