Maki Cruz, 53, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, October 5, 2026.

Maki was born on October 26, 1972, in Okinawa, Japan, to Masao Gima and Shizu Maehira. Her Japanese heritage remained an important part of her life, and she treasured the opportunity to visit her family in Japan and spend time with those she loved.

Maki found great joy in the simple things in life, especially sewing and knitting, hobbies that allowed her creativity to shine. She was also an amazing cook and took great pleasure in preparing delicious meals for her family.

Above all, Maki was a devoted wife, loving mother, and faithful friend who cherished the time she spent with the people who meant the most to her. Her family was at the heart of her life, and she especially enjoyed making memories with them. She also had a special place in her heart for her beloved dog, Happy, who could always bring a smile to her face.

Maki will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, Elisel Cruz; sons, Elisel "Mizuki" Cruz and Hiroki Cruz, both of Newport, North Carolina; mother, Shizu Maehira of Okinawa, Japan; sisters, Noriko Schweigert of Biling, Montana, Rie Butler of San Diego, California, and Kawano Yoshimi of Okinawa, Japan; and brother, Yasu Gima of Okinawa, Japan.

Maki was preceded in death by her father, Masao Gima.
