Beaufort

Linda Ashley Stanley, 79, died Friday, July 7, at Carteret Health Care surrounded by her family. A native of Person County, she was a graduate of Appalachian State University where she earned both her BA and MA in Science before settling in Raleigh, teaching at Carroll Middle School for sixteen years, and earning her MA in Education from ECU. She moved to Beaufort in 1986 where she taught Honors Biology at West Carteret High School, retiring in 1997.

A visitation will be held 6-8pm on Wednesday, July 12th, at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.

Upon retirement, Linda continued to be an active member of her community and continued educating children. She loved working with Carolina Ocean Studies and introducing students to marine ecosystems, volunteering at Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium and teaching visitors about shells and sea life, and volunteering with the Beaufort Historical Association where she immersed school kids in a historical trial.

Linda was an active member of Ann Street United Methodist Church in Beaufort, providing for Soups On and working with the after school care program by getting kids off the bus, providing snacks, and helping with homework.

Linda loved spending time with her family and going on adventures both near and far, traveling to the NC mountains, national parks, London, Italy, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and all fifty US states among other locations. Family gatherings brought her such happiness, and her grandchildren were her pride and joy.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Elijah Thomas Ashley and Alice Pennington Ashley; her brother Kenneth Thomas Ashley; her husband, Robert Willis Hamlin, Jr.; and her husband, Joseph Wilson Stanley.

She is survived by daughter Angela Hamlin Stephenson of Beaufort, NC; son Charles Warren Hamlin and partner Soo Goh of Raleigh, NC; sisters Irene Ashley Davis of Beaufort, NC and Nancy Ashley Rowland of Greensboro, NC; sister-in-law Julia Jaremenko Ashley of Roxboro, NC; her grandchildren Makenna Ashley Stephenson of Wilmington, NC, Elijah Wayne Stephenson of Beaufort, NC, and Walton Robert Stephenson of Wilmington, NC; and her companion Benjamin Alton Gardner of Gardnerville, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
