Lawrence “Wayne” Richards, 81, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on December 2, 2025, with his loving family by his side.
Born on October 20, 1944, in Rand, West Virginia, Wayne grew up in the hills that shaped his quiet strength and deep appreciation for the outdoors. At just 17, he bravely set out for Washington, D.C., where fate brought him to the love of his life, Sue. From that moment on, they shared 62 years of unwavering partnership—built on friendship, loyalty, laughter, and a love that never wavered.
Wayne was happiest outdoors, especially in the stillness of the woods. Hunting wasn’t just a hobby for him; it was where he recharged, reflected, and felt most at peace. He spent his career with the Defense Printing Service inside the Pentagon, taking pride in his work and the people he served alongside. After retirement, Wayne and Sue created countless memories together at Lake Gaston before eventually settling in Newport.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Madaline and John Daugherty, and his sisters, Ann Coleman and Sue Dockham.
He leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Susan “Sue” Richards; his children, Paula Dykstra (Justin) of Hubert and Wayne Richards (Katie) of Newport; his grandchildren, Taylor, Dacota, and Avery Andrada, Kayley and Lily Richards, and Justin and Jaelynn Dykstra; and his sister, Brenda Beard (Jack) of Cedar Grove, West Virginia. He also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends who loved him deeply.
To those who knew him, Wayne will be remembered for his gentle heart, his quiet humor, and the way he made people feel safe and welcomed. He had a gift for making any room feel warmer just by being in it. His family will miss his voice, his steady presence, and the simple comfort of knowing he was there.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful team at Liberty Hospice for the compassionate and dignified care they provided to Wayne and his family in his final days.
As he wished, there will be no memorial service. A private interment will take place at Gethsemane Memorial Park in Morehead City.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Wayne’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
