Kooch was born on August 31, 1944, in Morehead City, NC, to the late John K. Taylor and Carrie Guthrie Taylor. Later in life, Kooch time spent deer hunting in Long Bay with his hunting buddies, Joe Taylor, Kim Satler, and Johnny Freeman. They had many happy times together as seen in all the notches Kooch marked on his shotgun representing each victorious hunt.
