Larry “Bobby” Roberts Davis, Sr., 88, passed away on December 26, 2025, at Carteret Health Care.
A funeral service to honor Bobby’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 30th at Trinity United Methodist Church in Marshallberg. Interment will follow at Victoria Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Bobby was born and raised in Marshallberg, NC. He spent 35 years in Civil Service at Cherry Point, but never found his identity in work; rather, Bobby found every opportunity to embrace the blessing of being born on Core Sound, spending every free moment enjoying the life-giving bounty it produced.
As was common Down East in days gone by, he lived with his parents and grandparents as his neighbors. His “Pappy” helped him build his first boat when he was 16. Building boats became a favorite pastime of his. He built many in his years, but none so treasured as his wooden sailboat, “Seabird”, named after his Pappy’s sailboat from his childhood. The sail, also handmade, he created from instructions he read in a library book. It was a fine, quick craft that provided many years of enjoyment in the shallow “fingers” of Codd’s Creek at Core Banks.
With a lifelong love of reading, Bobby could always be seen during his quiet hours (or hours he wished were quiet) with a book in his hand. He had an unquenchable desire for learning. He could wire, plumb, and roof a house, because he read about it. He became a professional photographer (when film was the only option), because he read about it. His love for reading and desire for knowledge continued to his final days.
Bobby was a kind, gentle, and very patient man who loved his family well. He was effortlessly hilarious with an unmatched wit, and was renowned for his detailed story-telling abilities. He loved to sit in his recliner with his beloved golden doodle, “Danny” at his feet. Much to the delight of his grandchildren, his stories were “colorful” and he never failed to bring them laughter, sometimes not even for the subject matter, but for his gift of storytelling. Bobby’s grandchildren were his greatest fans, and that feeling was mutual, as was evidenced by the grin on his face when they appeared at his front door.
Bobby is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 67 years, Sylvia Salter Davis of Beaufort; daughters, Lida Davis Lewis of Beaufort and Tammy Davis McLaughlin (Joey) of Trenton; sons, Mark Christian Davis (Robin) of Wilmington and Jody Heath Davis of Greenville; grandchildren, Brandie McGrath (Shane) of New Bern, Tiffany Johnson of Beaufort, Cameron Guthrie (Brooke) of New Bern, Chad Davis of Morehead City, Sydney and Ryan Davis, of Wilmington
Bobby is also survived by his sisters, Sandra Davis of Morehead City, and Deborah and Melva Davis of Marshallberg.
Also, remaining of his beloved family are his adoring greatgrandchildren, Kendall Howell, Micah, Alexander, and Ember Johnson, Jordan Turner, and Smithey Lane Guthrie.
He is predeceased by his son, Larry Roberts Davis, Jr. (Bobby Jr.) and his parents, Melvin and Lula Davis of Marshallberg.
