Kyle William Shertzer, 54, of Morehead City, North Carolina, departed this life on Monday, October 27, 2025, at Duke University Hospital.
A memorial service to honor Kyle’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, November 8th at St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church in Salter Path.
Born on August 11, 1971, in Los Angeles, California, Kyle was the son of Howard and Ellen Shertzer. His academic journey began at Xavier University, where he earned his bachelor's degree, followed by a Ph.D. in biomathematics from North Carolina State University. Kyle dedicated his career to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), serving as a senior scientist in marine biology, where he made significant contributions to the field.
Known for his sharp wit and infectious sense of humor, which ranged from clever quips to the most light-hearted Dad jokes, Kyle had a unique talent for bringing joy to those around him.
Sports were an important aspect of Kyle's life; he played Division 1 soccer while at Xavier University and remained active in local co-ed clubs until health issues prevented him from doing so. He shared his love, skill and technique for soccer with his daughters, volunteering as a coach for their teams over the years. Kyle was also an avid runner and enjoyed half marathon training with his daughter. Kyle especially enjoyed his time as a sled dog guide in the Boundary Waters area of Northern Minnesota, where he embraced both physical activity and the beauty of nature.
Music was another passion of Kyle's. An accomplished bass guitarist, he enjoyed performing locally with his wife, stepson and friends, and he always surrounded himself with the sounds of his favorite tunes. His interests extended to fishing, camping, and cooking delicious meals for family and friends. Always one to keep his mind active, Kyle enjoyed the challenge of solving logic puzzles.
A defining moment in Kyle’s spiritual life occurred when he was baptized on February 2, 2025, at St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, reflecting his deep love for the Lord and his family. More than anything, Kyle cherished spending time with his family and loved ones who meant the world to him.
Kyle will be remembered for his passion for knowledge, remarkable career, and devotion to his family and faith.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Jacqueline “Jackie” Shertzer; daughters, Clara Louise Shertzer and Eliza Leonore Shertzer; son, James Burdick; brother, Kevin Maurice Shertzer; parents, Howard and Ellen Shertzer; uncle, Jeff Shertzer; and cousins, Ira Shertzer and Kelly Longsdorff.
