Kay Louise Curtis Griffin, 79, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away on September 17, 2024, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House.

Her memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, September 28, at Life Point Church on Hibbs Road in Newport.

Kay was born October 30, 1944, to the late Roland and Beth Curtis in Lunenburg, Massachusetts. She was the middle child of five children. Kay graduated from Lunenburg High School where she was inducted into the school’s basketball hall of fame. 

After high school, Kay worked for Pratt-Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, Connecticut where she met the love of her life, Joe Griffin, in New London, Connecticut on the 22nd of April 1967, and on the 29th of April 1967, he asked her to marry him. They were married on December 26, 1967, and Joe left for Vietnam 5 days later. They were later stationed in Washington State, New Hampshire, Hawaii, Alaska, Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia. They retired to Alaska and returned to North Carolina six years later. Kay worked as a teacher at various duty stations and retired from her academic career at Newport Elementary School. 

Kay is survived by her husband, Joe Griffin; daughter, Bonny Sue Griffin; son, Jesse Roland Griffin and wife Heather; sister, Bonny Maclean and husband Kenny; brother, Scott Curtis and wife Bobbie; five grandchildren, Lindsay Griffin and husband Justin, Heather Kay Clark and husband Quinn, John-William Griffin and wife Kristina, Joseph-Richard Clark, Jesse Roland Griffin II; and three great-grandchildren, Lillian Nunez, Brody Griffin and Rogan Griffin. 

She was preceded in death by her brother, Roland Ashley “Butchy” Curtis Jr., and sister, Cynthia Sue Curtis.
