Obituary

Johnnie Miller, 72, of Swansboro, North Carolina, passed away on Friday, October 9, 2026.

A memorial service to honor Johnnie’s life will be held at a later date.

Johnnie was born on October 4, 1954, in Marion, South Carolina, to the late Sydney and Almetta Miller.

Johnnie was the kind of man who always spoke his mind and stood firmly behind what he believed. He was a straight shooter who never hesitated to tell you exactly what he thought, and those who knew him appreciated his honesty and the genuine person he was. Beneath that straightforward nature was a kind heart, and he often showed his kindness through his generosity and willingness to give to others.

A master carpenter, Johnnie built a fulfilling career in construction. There wasn't much he couldn't fix, and he had a talent for working with his hands and figuring out how to make things right. His skills and knowledge were a reflection of his hardworking nature and the pride he took in what he did.

Outside of work, Johnnie enjoyed a variety of hobbies and pastimes. He loved being in the kitchen, preparing good food and sharing his love of cooking with others. His banana pudding was a favorite and something he made especially well. He also enjoyed spending time in his garden and preserving vegetables through canning. In his downtime, Johnnie liked watching movies, going on cruises, and playing darts.

Family was an important part of Johnnie’s life, and he held a special affection for his nieces and nephews. They were especially dear to him, and the love he had for his family was a meaningful part of who he was.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Peggy Miller; sisters, Debra Gray and Frankie Coleman, both of New Bern, NC; sisters-in-law, Linda Kogut, Shari Kogut, Rita Ross, Eileen Young, Karen Grant, and Galen Kogut; brother-in-law, Dan Ross; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Johnnie was preceded in death by his sister, Darlene Butler; brother, Niven Miller; brothers-in-law, Dennis Kogut and Joseph Kogut.

As an expression of sympathy, contributions may be made in memory of Johnnie to the Baptist Children's Homes of NC - Kennedy Home, 2557 Cedar Dell Lane, Kinston, NC 28504.
