John "Jack" Thompson Jr.

John “Jack” Thompson Jr., 97, of Beaufort, North Carolina, passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at his home.

Jack was born on November 29, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York, to the late John Thompson Sr. and Mabel Davidson Thompson. He was a proud World War II Navy veteran and a longtime public servant. After his service, he continued to protect and serve as a police officer in New York City under “Emergency One”. Jack’s dedication to service didn’t stop there; he became the Mayor pro temp of Pine Knoll Shores for a while. 

A man of many hats, he was an active member of the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, and the American Legion, as well as a devoted worker for the Pine Knoll Shores Fire and Emergency Medical Services. His contributions were invaluable and deeply appreciated by those he served. 

Beyond his professional and civic duties, Jack had a lifelong passion for golf, which he enjoyed an impressive 71 years. As one of the oldest members of the Morehead City Country Club, he relished walking all 18 holes of the golf course. 

Jack was a devoted family man. He was a loving companion, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. A life well lived to be sure. His service, love, and legacy will not be forgotten. May his friends and family hold his memory close to their hearts.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his companion, Mary Rancer of the home; daughters, Deborah Roach of Morehead City, NC, Cindy Wilson of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Windy Lockhart of Thomasville, NC; son, John Thompson of Savannah, GA; grandchildren, Catherine, Charles, Elizabeth, Garland, and Jonathan; great-grandchildren, Mason, Ivy, Jasmine, Winnie, Zoey, Sean, Jonathan Jr., Khairen, and Garland Jr., and great-great-grandchildren, Landon and Lucas.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred Mary Thompson; sister, Josephine Junninger; and great-granddaughter, Vanessa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jack’s name to a charity of your choosing.
