Obituary

Joan Skipper Jones, with grace, peace, and her family by her side, took her last bow on May 13, 2026.

Joan, affectionately known as “Mimi,” was born on March 25, 1948, in Charleston, South Carolina, to the late Otis Skipper and Margaret Neese Skipper. She graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem. Deeply proud of her Southern roots, Mimi cherished the warmth, traditions, and gracious hospitality that defined the South. A proud Carolinian through and through, she loved the people, values, and way of life that made the region so special to her. Mimi also had a deep love for her country and held immense admiration and respect for the men and women who faithfully serve in the United States military.

During her years in Winston-Salem, she was active in the Moravian church, where she lovingly volunteered many hours caring for children in the nursery. Mimi never met a stranger. Her warm spirit, kind heart, and wonderful sense of humor made everyone feel welcome in her presence. She was generous by nature and always willing to lend a helping hand to those around her.

She found joy in life’s simple pleasures and had a deep love for nature, especially sea turtles The beach is where she found the most peace and tranquility. Mimi was also an avid ACC basketball fan and faithfully cheered on her beloved Wake Forest team through the years.

Above all else, Mimi treasured her family. Being a grandmother was one of the greatest joys of her life, and her grandchildren were truly the light of her world. She loved them deeply and created countless memories filled with laughter, warmth, and unconditional love that they will cherish forever.

Those remaining to cherish her memory are her sons, David Jones (Ashley) of Morehead City, NC and Matt Jones (Kelly) of Salisbury, MD; sister, Joy Skipper Cornwell of Charleston, SC; her niece, who was more like a daughter, Rhett Tuten (Bruce) of Cary, NC; grandchildren, Taylor, Hattie, Paxton, Jarrett, Shanya, and Brooklynn Jones; and great niece and nephew, Maggie Antkiewicz and Will Rich.
