Jerry Mason Pittman “Captain JP”, 86, of Salter Path, North Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at his home.
A funeral service to honor Jerry’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 2nd at Salter Path Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Donald Thomas and Rev. Paul Loftin. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Jerry was born on March 16, 1937, in Morehead City, NC, to the late Jimmy Pittman and Flora Bell Pittman. He lived the salt life and loved being on the water, working hard as a commercial fisherman. He was known for his strong work ethic, and he gladly dedicated his life to providing for his family. Born and raised on the coast, it’s no wonder that his favorite foods included hard crabs, scallops, oysters, or mullet roe.
Outside of work, Jerry had a passion for baseball and was known for his skill as a pitcher. He also had a talent for playing the guitar and found joy in strumming its melodies. One of the ways he relaxed was by painting conch shells and creating beautiful pieces of art. In his free time, he tended to his garden, taking pride in growing corn and tomatoes.
Above all, Jerry cherished his family. He was a loving husband and a devoted father who adored his grandchildren and found immense happiness in spending time with them. His grandchildren were spoiled with sweets, especially Orange Push-Ups and M&M’s.
Jerry had a warm and generous heart, always willing to help those in need. He never knew a stranger and would go out of his way to lend a helping hand. Honest and straightforward, he had a way of telling it like it is, leaving a lasting impact on all those around him.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Yvonne Pittman; children, Jay Pittman (Vista) of Salter Path, Angela Peele of Salter Path, Roger Pittman (Lisa) of Beaufort, Debra Lynn Pittman of Salter Path; and sisters, Betty Willis of Pine Knoll Shores and Katie Barefoot of Salter Path. Jerry was blessed with 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his siblings, Gary Pittman, Jack Pittman, Tillie Willis, Helen Frost, and Otis Pittman.
The family would like to especially thank 3HC Hospice for their kindness and compassion during Jerry’s last days.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial cards may be sent to the family or donations may be made to 3HC Hospice.
