Jean Dukes Davenport Peterson

April 17, 1949 — November 25, 2024

Formerly of Morehead City

Jean Dukes Davenport Peterson of Morehead City, NC, entered her eternal home into the arms of Jesus on Monday, November 25, 2024, at LiveWell Cary-Wessex.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., December 13th at First Methodist Church in Morehead City.

Jean was born on April 17, 1949, in Charlotte, NC, to Bill Trammell and Jeanette Dukes Davenport. Her father was a World War II Naval Aviator, and the family moved to Norfolk, VA, before arriving in Morehead City, NC, in 1959.

Jean graduated from West Carteret High School and was the Valedictorian of her 1967 Class. She was in the West Carteret Marching Band, first as a flautist and later as a majorette her senior year. She graduated Cum Laude from Meredith College with a degree in Home Economics and K-3 Licensure. At Meredith, Jean was active in the Hunter-Jumper Program and participated in a fox hunt with Durham Hunt Club. Jean was quite the horsewoman in her youth. She and her horse, Prince, participated and ribboned in Morehead City and Beaufort Horse Shows. Jean continued this love of riding and shared it with her daughter, Shannon, at Fort Bragg Stables.

Jean was an Army wife and spent time overseas in Okinawa during the Vietnam War where she taught English to Japanese women and children. Upon returning to the States and completing her last year of college, Jean lived in Raleigh, NC, and worked as a Public Information Officer for Mental Health in the North Carolina Department of Human Resources.

Jean was a homemaker and mother of her children, Shannon Leigh and Everette Lindsay “Lin” III. She returned to Meredith College in 1991 to complete a Paralegal Certification Program. Jean lived in Clinton, NC, and raised her children there from 1978. She returned to her childhood home of Morehead City full-time in the 2010's. Jean was an active member of First Baptist Church in Clinton and First Methodist Church in Morehead City.

Jean is survived by her brother, Bill Trammell Davenport, Jr. (Katie); her children, Shannon Peterson Miller (Kevin) of Cape Carteret and Everette Lindsay “Lin” Peterson, III (Megan) of Raleigh; grandchildren, Elizabeth Trammell Miller, Everett Michael Peterson, and Verdie Dukes Peterson; and several beloved cousins, aunts, nieces and nephews.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Bill Trammell and Jeanette Dukes Davenport.

Her children would like to thank the community of Stoneridge Cary for being family to both their mother and them since her move in February and to Transitions Lifecare Hospice for the compassionate, supportive care they provided.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean’s memory to First Methodist Church, 900 Arendell Street, Morehead City, NC 28557, or Carteret County Domestic Violence Program, PO Box 2279, Morehead City, NC, 28557.
