She attended schools in Spruce, WV and Elkins, WV and was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1956 where she was awarded the outstanding business student award.
On April 12, 1958, in Elkins, WV, she married Lawrence "Larry" D. Poling. They enjoyed many happy years travelling in their fifth wheel recreational vehicle throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada. They were blessed with 65 wonderful years together.

Jan was also longtime member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church on Adams Creek Road in Havelock, NC where she attended for many years with her family.
