Morehead City

Jane Frances Burke, 64, of Morehead City, NC passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2025.

Jane was born in Elkins, WV, on April 5, 1961, and was the youngest child of the late Donald Michael Burke and Phyllis Lowery Burke. She was a high school graduate of Mt. de Chantal Visitation Academy in Wheeling WV. She attended West Virginia University and Davis and Elkins College before completing her undergraduate degree at UNC Greensboro in Greensboro, NC. She then completed her law degree (JD) at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC.

After finishing law school and passing the bar exam she practiced law for a few years in Durham, NC, then moved to Morehead City, NC. She practiced law in several roles and finished her employment as an assistant public defender in Carteret County, NC. In addition to her law practice, she had taught business law at Carteret Community College and served on the board of directors at the local women’s shelter.

In June 1997 Jane married Philip Carl Hamann. Phil preceded her in death in 2024. Jane and Phil had no children.

Jane is survived by her siblings, Virginia Burke Karb (Ken) of Greensboro, NC, Louise Burke Hales (George), D. Michael Burke, and Thomas L. Burke (Tammi), all of Martinsburg, WV; and their children, Dan (Sofi), Ben, Mike, Tom (Annie), Logan (Cam), and Ellie (Alec); and a great niece and a great nephew.

In Morehead City she is survived by her two sisters-in-law, Oneida Levine and Mary Sue Hamann; their children; and many other cousins of her late husband Phil.

The family would like to thank Jane’s sister-in-law Oneida Levine and Phil’s cousin Connie Mason for their friendship and care of Jane; she loved going out for their weekly dinners. The family would also like to thank her neighbor Joy Ellen Coombs who watched out for her, shared her love of kitties, and was a good friend.

Jane was a creative jewelry maker and crafter. She enjoyed making gifts for family and friends. She loved and enjoyed her and Phil’s nieces and nephews and especially looked forward to the annual Burke family reunion each June. Jane was a friend to many, and maintained long-term friendships throughout her life, including elementary and high school classmates. She had a great sense of humor.

Jane was cremated and her wish was to have no service.
