Dr. J. Fred Read

Dr J. Fred Read, 81, of Pine Knoll Shores, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, May 24, 2025, surrounded by family.

Fred was born in Manchester England to the late Jack and Clara Read. He obtained his PhD in Geology from the University of Western Australia and continued his 40 year career at Virginia Tech leaving a rich legacy in both research and teaching.

His professional legacy will continue through his many graduate students and close colleagues who also loved and respected him.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Pauline Hahn; daughter, Stephanie Tulloch; stepdaughters, Madeline Carrig and Lindel Foster; stepson, Bobby Carrig; and ten step grandchildren.

He also leaves a loving family in Western Australia including his brother, Jack Read and sister-in-law, Robin Read, and nephews, Scotty and Damien, and their families.

In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his step grandson, Thomas Foster.
