James A.
Deeter "Jim"
April 22, 1942 — September 9, 2026
Morehead City
James A. Deeter “Jim”, a man richly and deeply rooted in the Christian faith, went into Glory at daybreak, September 9th, 2026 at Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport, NC, following a brief illness.
Jim was born on April 22nd, 1942, in Springfield, Ohio to the late James and Mildred Deeter. He grew up in and around Parkersburg, West Virginia. He graduated from High School and married Sandy Randolph Deeter. He joined the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country for 4 years. His work career took him to Florida with his young family and that was where a new faith journey changed everything.
Jim's faith journey began in 1976 at age 34. Shortly thereafter he enrolled in Liberty Baptist College (now Liberty University) and achieved a pastoral degree. He began his public ministry at Temple Baptist Church in Morehead City, NC. He continued his ministry in churches in Ohio, West Virginia, and North Carolina. He completed his Masters degree in History at Marshall University while pastoring a church in Huntington, West Virginia.
Jim was a sinner chosen by God, called by God, saved by grace through faith, lived by grace, received dying grace and was raised to Glory.
He transitioned from full time pastoring to become a Christian school educator at Gramercy Christian School, Newport, NC, retiring at the age of 80. He was an educator and his impact was immense among his students. He had a way of making complex topics easy to understand.
Jim enjoyed his family, his grandson’s homemade pizza, and deer hunting. He was also a Ham Radio operator (W8JAD) and built his first Ham Radio at age 14. He was an Atlanta Braves fan, avid watcher of the Andy Griffith Show, and a movie buff.
Reserved and respectable, trustworthy and faithful - always punctual - meticulous and methodical, intellectual and comical
His legacy was his family and friends whom he influenced with his rich faith and profound sense of the holiness of God.
Those remaining to cherish Jim’s memory are his wife Elizabeth “Betsy” Shanor Deeter, her son David Aleshire (Christina) and his sister Cindy Newland. Jim’s three daughters include his oldest daughter Julie Doshier (Danny) her children Stephanie, Jon Micheal, and Sandy, his middle daughter Debbie Henderson (Doug) and her sons Douglas, James, and Gabriel, his youngest daughter Tammy Dame (Frank) her children Missy and Joshua. Jim also has 7 great grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mildred Deeter, Jim’s first wife Sandra “Sandy” Randolph Deeter, and his brother, 1st Lieutenant Micheal Deeter who was killed serving his country in Vietnam.
A private graveside service will be held at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Newport, NC officiated by Rev. Norman Waligora.
As an expression of sympathy, please, in lieu of flowers, make memorial contributions to the Mr. Deeter’s scholarship fund at Gramercy Christian School 8170 Hwy 70 Newport, NC, 28570.
