Harold "Gus" Gustafson

Harold "Gus" Gustafson, age 97.5, of Newport, North Carolina, went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 19, 2026, after a brief illness.

Gus began his Army career by attending officer candidate school in 1947 and was then commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1971. During his career, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and the Army Commendation Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters. He proudly served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He was stationed overseas in Okinawa (twice), France, and Thailand as well as several posts stateside. He loved his Army career and never stopped telling his "Army stories."

Gus and his late wife Vicky enjoyed bowling and belonged to many leagues over the years. They also enjoyed spending time with friends and families in campgrounds where they owned a travel trailer. Skiing, boating, singing, fish frys, and laughing were common agendas.

Gus was a long-time member of Parkview Baptist Church and also Open Door Baptist Church and served in several capacities over the years.

He is survived by his daughter Ann Donnelly and her husband Mike of Topsail Beach, NC, and his brother Arnold and his wife Janet, and their children Glenn and Kristen of Newport Richey, FL.

Gus was preceded in death by the love of his life, Vicky, of 61 years; his daughter, Pat, in 2017; and his son, Jimmy, in 2024.

A private service will be held at a later date.
