Guyon Daniel “Dannie” Lewis, 83, of Harkers Island, North Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at Pruitt Health–Crystal Coast.

A funeral service to honor Dannie’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, December 20th at Refuge Fellowship Church on Harkers Island, officiated by Rev. Manley B. Rose Jr. Interment will follow at Armecia Lewis Cemetery on Harkers Island. The family will receive friends the evening prior from 6 p.m. until 8p.m., Friday, December 19th at Refuge Fellowship Church. Though his final days were spent at Pruitt, Dannie’s heart never left Harkers Island, the place he loved all his life. He has now gone to a home more wonderful than he ever knew. Born January 31, 1942, to Guyon and Nell Lewis, Dannie was the oldest of four sons and an Island boy through and through.

Dannie attended school through the eighth grade, leaving during the ninth grade to fish alongside his grandfather and help support his family. As a young man, he briefly worked on a dredge boat, but being away from home never felt right. He soon returned and began a 40-year career at Atlantic Veneer in Beaufort. Known for his reliability, strong work ethic, and quiet demeanor, Dannie formed many lasting friendships and earned the deep respect of his coworkers. He was the kind of man no one ever had a bad word to say about.

Dannie shared 43 loving years of marriage with his beloved wife, Susan Louise Mazzarella. Early in their marriage, Susan encouraged Dannie to move to Canal Drive so they could live beside her sister, Joanne, and help raise their nephews, Keith Jr. and Bobby, whom they loved as their own sons. Susan preceded him in death in 2011 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Throughout their marriage and her illness, Dannie was a faithful husband and devoted caregiver, offering patience, love, and unwavering support.

Above all else, Dannie loved being a father and grandfather. His daughter, Danielle Lewis Taylor (“Dani Jo”), was the pride and joy of his life, and that love grew even more with the arrival of his granddaughters, Isabella Marie Taylor and Ava Susanne Taylor, who affectionately called him Little Pop. All three of his girls brought warmth and meaning to his life, and he treasured every moment with them—cheering at ball games, applauding at band recitals, celebrating achievements at award ceremonies, and attending every special event he could—always present, always proud, and always early.

Dannie found joy in life’s simplest pleasures—working in his yard and shop, taking slow drives around the Island, especially to Shell Point, and spending his mornings as a devoted member of the Seaside coffee crew before stopping by the Bullpen at Leslie Rogers to share stories and fellowship. Quiet and kind, he would help anyone in need without ever seeking recognition. He lived simply, gave freely, and cherished his faith, with his church family at Smyrna Pentecostal Holiness Church holding a special place in his heart.

He is survived by his daughter, Danielle Lewis Taylor (“Dani Jo”); his granddaughters, Isabella Marie Taylor and Ava Susanne Taylor and their father, Harry G. Taylor Jr.; his brothers, Richard “Dick” Lewis (Charlotte) and Ronnie Paul Lewis; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Susan Louise Mazzarella; his parents, Guyon and Nell Lewis; his brother, Everrett “Buddy” Lewis; his sister-in-law, Joanne Poole; and his nephew, Robert “Bobby” Moore.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to Howard and Kathy Gillikin, Kim Lupton, Shelley Garner, Sheila Moore, Manley “Bonzelle” Rose Sr., and the many neighbors and friends who helped Dannie remain at home on Harkers Island for as long as possible. They also wish to thank the staff at Pruitt Health for their compassion and care.
