George Lewis Jr., 79, of Morehead City, passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at his home.

A Celebration of Life honoring George will be held at a later date.

George was born on November 6, 1945, in Morehead City, to the late George and Mary Lewis. A proud native of Morehead City, George was a 1966 graduate of West Carteret High School, where he played football and made lifelong friendships. He later earned a bachelor's degree in coal mining.

George dedicated over 30 years of his life to the Newport prison, where he had a sense of commitment and a steady presence. George and his beloved bride shared a deep love for the coast, they enjoyed walking on the beach collecting shells and taking trips together whenever they could. He loved flounder gigging, clamming, and hunting. His strength, laughter, and generous heart will be dearly missed by his friends and family alike.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Sherri McNamara Lewis of the home; children, Michelle Fore-Siglin (Tim) of Tennessee, Judi-Marie Squires (Mike) of Broad Creek, James Andrew Smith of Newport, Paul Richard Smith Jr. (Kim) of Morehead City; grandchildren, CJ, Kayla (Matt), Rachel (Crockett), Shawn, Michael, Marie (Jamie), Megan (Jack), Paul Austin, Elizabeth, Lindsay, and Gracie; great-grandchildren, Isaak and Scarlett; and best friend, Jason Owen.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Lewis; and his uncle Kelly.
