George W. Gusler, 78 of Cape Carteret, North Carolina, passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at his home in Cape Carteret. He was surrounded by his wife, Sally, daughter, Alison and son, Greg.

George was born in Collinsville, Virginia and graduated from John D. Bassett High School. In 1966 he enlisted in the Army and then enlisted in the Army Reserve. He was honorably discharged in 1972.

From 1970 to 1993, he worked for Centel (Sprint) in various positions of increasing responsibility throughout the United States. In 1982 he moved to Asheboro, NC as District Manager. George was extensively involved in the community, serving as a Board Member of various organizations, including the Randolph County United Way, YMCA, NC Telephone Association, Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce and the Randolph Community College Foundation Board.

In 1993, George accepted the position of Executive Vice President of the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce. He held this position until his retirement in 2014. Among his many notable accomplishments, he modernized the Chamber office, created many new programs including the Leadership Randolph Program, Asheboro Christmas Parade, Chamber Golf Tournament and Asheboro/Randolph Business Showcase.

In 2014 he retired and moved to Cape Carteret. He and his wife Sally Steele enjoyed exploring up and down NC's coast, fishing, boating and bird watching. Most of all they loved traveling different countries and the U.S., and spoiling their beloved cat, Maggie. George was a friend to many and always enjoyed a good happy hour.

George is survived by his wife Sally Cranford Steele, daughter Alison Gusler, son Greg Gusler, grandson Sam Gusler and stepson Charlie Steele.

There will be no funeral service.
