Gene Clayton Mason Sr., 81, of Beaufort, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at ECU Health Medical Center.

At Gene’s request, the family will have a private memorial service to be held on July 28th at Munden Funeral Home.

Born on March 4, 1944, in Beaufort, NC, Gene was the son of the late Primrose and Lena Mason. Following high school, Gene served in the United States Coast Guard where he was proud of his military service.

A passionate educator, Gene advanced his studies at Pembroke College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He was well regarded in the Carteret County community, sharing his love of learning and enthusiasm for sports with countless students during his fulfilling career as a teacher and coach.

In his free time, Gene enjoyed spending time on the water, always ready to go clamming and mullet fishing.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his sons, Chad Mason (Marisa) and Gene C. Mason Jr., all of Beaufort, NC; grandson, Tyler Clayton Mason (Justine); and great grandson, Conley. Also surviving are his sisters, Mildred Beacham, Linda Davis, Cathryn Baca, Shirley Mason, Joyce Gaskill and Paula Howington; brothers, Jimmy Mason, Michael Mason, Gordie Mason, Perry Mason, and Phillip Mason; and a host of additional family members and loved ones.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his very special friend, Chiyo Simabuka Bowen; sisters, Hazel Bunker, Ruth Knudsen, Doris Small, and Dollie Gray; and brothers, Elton Mason, Ralph Mason, and Gerald Mason; along with numerous close family members.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gene’s memory to a charity on one’s choice.
