The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Tuesday, January 16th at Munden Funeral Home. A resident of Morehead City since 1962, he was born in Petersburg, Virginia, on August 26, 1946, to Nancy Bradsher Gill and Frederick Arthur Gill, Jr. Art was a member of the first class to graduate from West Carteret High School in 1965 and graduated from North Carolina State University with degrees in Engineering Operations and Business. After working a few years as an engineer at the Airwork Facility, Cherry Point, he started Anser-Quik Enterprises in Morehead City, providing a variety of communication services in Carteret County.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryll Saunders Gill; daughters, Christi Gill Fig and Amy Gill Warren; son-in-law, Randy Warren; grandchildren, Alexandra Kristine Fig, Chelsea Marie Guthrie, Mary Elizabeth Warren, Katherine Anne Warren, Emily Christine Warren, and Robert Michael Warren; and stepdaughter, Michelle Cox and husband Lewis Cox.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Nancy Gill Weaver and Elizabeth Gill Daniel.
Beginning in high school, much of Art’s life was spent volunteering as a firefighter, arson inspector, and emergency medical technician. He was the assistant fire chief at Atlantic Beach Volunteer Fire Department and Lieutenant at Morehead City Volunteer Fire Department. He was one of the founding creators of the Atlantic Beach King Mackerel Tournament and served on the board for many years.
After obtaining his pilot’s license in the 1980’s he became an active member of the North Carolina Civil Air Patrol and the Beaufort Airport Authority. He was also a long-time member of the Morehead City Rotary Club and assisted with the West Carteret High School Marching Band when granddaughter Chelsea was a member.
However, the North Carolina Seafood Festival was truly his passion. Art served for over 30 years in various volunteer board positions. His favorite and last position he held as Entertainment Director, combined his love for music (especially beach music) and his incredible talent for organizing.
In his spare time, he spent over 20 years converting a Baltimore city bus to a beautiful RV which he was able to take on many excursions, including a 53-day trip with his wife Cheryll from Morehead City to Alaska and back. Truly a trip of a lifetime.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Morehead City Fire and Rescue Auxiliary, 4034 Arendell St., Morehead City, NC 28557.
