Freddie Alton Spence, 83, of Straits, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2026, at Pruitt Health - Crystal Coast.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held at a later date at Gethsemane Memorial Park for family and close friends.
Freddie was born on June 13, 1943, in Kinston, North Carolina, to the late James Horace Spence and Elsie Green Spence. As a young man, he was a gifted athlete who played football, ran track, and was voted Most Athletic by his high school class. Following graduation, he attended Frederick Military Academy before proudly serving his country in the United States Army for three years as a member of the 101st Airborne Division.
A man of exceptional talent and determination, Freddie built a career defined by skill and craftsmanship. He was a master pipe fitter, an accomplished welder, and a master boat builder. His strong work ethic and commitment to excellence were evident in everything he did.
When he wasn't working, Freddie found his greatest joy on the water. Whether boating or simply spending time near it, he loved everything about coastal life.
Freddie embraced life with an adventurous spirit. He was outspoken, disciplined, and known for his unwavering integrity and honesty. Generous by nature and always willing to lend a helping hand, he had a kind heart that touched many lives. Above all else, Freddie loved his family and treasured every moment spent with his children and grandchildren.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 61 years, Bridgitte Harritshoj Spence; his daughters, Tina Maria Spence Tillman and Susanne "Susie" Cecelia Spence; his grandchildren, Craig Louis Hancock (Lindi), Ellen Tillman Turnage (Jeremy), and Glenn Moss Tillman II (Jessy); six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, Freddie was preceded in death by his sister, Gloria E. Riggs; his brother, Jerry E. Spence; son-in-law, Glenn Moss Tillman; and grandson, Mark Daniel Hancock.
