Obituary

Ellen Elizabeth Steranko, 80, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at her home Ellen E. Steranko, 80, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, August 6, 2026.

Born on February 25, 1946, in Washington, DC, Ellen was the beloved daughter of the late Winston and Grace McNamara. She dedicated nearly 40 years of service as a technical editor with Civil Service at Naval Air Depot (NADEP) where she was known for her strong work ethic, attention to detail, and unwavering dedication. Even after retiring, Ellen remained active by lending a helping hand with her husband Philip's construction business.

Ellen found joy in life's simple pleasures. She was an avid reader who could often be found enjoying a classic movie or favorite television show. She had a green thumb and took great pride in her garden, finding peace and satisfaction in caring for her flowers and plants. Bluegrass music held a special place in her heart, and she especially looked forward to attending the bluegrass performances at Dickinson College. She also had a love for travel and had many happy memories of exploring destinations across the United States and throughout Europe.

Above all else, Ellen's greatest joy was her family. Her granddaughter, Gwendolyn, was the light of her life, and the time they spent together brought her immeasurable happiness.

Those remaining to cherish her memory are her devoted husband, Philip Steranko; her sister, Barbara Raymond of Toano, Virginia; her brother, Jeff McNamara (Jody) of Elizabeth City, North Carolina; and her beloved granddaughter, Gwendolyn Middleton (Matthew Garneau) of Havelock, North Carolina.

In addition to her parents, Ellen was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Margaret Jones.
