Ellen Catherine Barrett

Ellen Catherine Barrett, 75, of Beaufort, North Carolina, passed away at her home on Friday, June 21, 2024.

A memorial mass to honor Ellen’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 27th at St. Egbert Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow at the Church Columbarium. 

Ellen was born on November 17, 1948, in Queens, New York, to the late Edward and Catherine Amato. Her compassionate and selfless nature was evident throughout her life, particularly during her nearly 25-year tenure as a dedicated registered nurse at Kings Park Psychiatric Center.

Upon retiring, she and her beloved husband William embarked on a new chapter. They made the move South, settling in Beaufort, NC, where Ellen embraced community life wholeheartedly. She was a devoted woman of faith who was an active member of St. Egbert Catholic Church, lending her time and talents to the Ladies Auxiliary. Despite stepping back from full-time work, Ellen remained busy by taking up part-time nursing roles in local prisons and contributing her efforts to volunteering with blood drives within the community. Ellen’s commitment to helping others and her dedication will be remembered fondly by all who knew her.

Those remaining to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 44 years, William O. Barrett; step-children, William Barrett (Nidia) of Danbury, CT, JoAnn Scime (Phil) of Kings Park, NY, Carmel Barrett of Glendale, AZ, and Richard Barrett (Elizabeth) of Kings Park, NY; sister, Cathy Schultz (John) of Denver, CO; brother, Edward Amato (Mary) of Yonkers, NY; 11 step-grandchildren; and 6 step-great-grandchildren.
